Balmshot Lip Balm

Balmshot Lip Balm

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Wayne S. Forrey, the company's founder and product inventor, contracted lip cancer in 1983 due to his outdoor lifestyle and frequent sunburned lips. After successful lip reconstruction surgery, he began using lip balm everyday to protect and moisturize his lips. Wayne became dissatisfied with industry standard lip balm dispensers because the knurled disk base would twist and rotate in his pants pockets...thereby mashing the balm into the cap...making a gooey mess. Many people told Wayne they experienced the exact same gooey mess. To solve this problem, Wayne went to his garage and invented a much better lip balm dispenser system including a firmer twist base and tighter fitting cap. BALMSHOT was the result of this innovative effort, and a new Idaho company was born in 2010.
Chapped lips are usually not a problem for me. I have poor saliva control, so I'm usually dealing with wet lips and sore, chafed chin skin, where it's inflamed because of 'sitting' in wetness for long periods.

However, there ARE times where my lips DO get dry and uncomfortable. But normal lip balm doesn't really work for me. It usually washes right off. Enter BalmShot, which is made with beeswax, so it has better staying power than petroleum jelly-based balms.

I received a box full of 3 different flavors of BalmShot; Classic, Cool Mint and Vanilla Mint. Let's take a look at them.

^^what I received^^

CLASSIC
I gave this to Mama Melissa when she had a cold and her lips were cracking. Since she is diabetic (well, TECHNICALLY Pre-Diabetic, but let’s not split hairs here), I wasn’t 100% sure if the other two flavors had any sugar content in them, and I wasn’t about to raise her numbers over lip balm.
She instantly fell in LOVE with it. She said the dial turned easily, the balm was NOT goopy or slimy, and it applied very smoothly to her lips. She also said she felt instant relief from the burning her lips were experiencing.

COOL MINT
I was a bit disappointed in this flavor. It didn’t seem as heavy on the mint flavor as I would have liked it to be, considering it was a strictly mint flavored lip balm. The smell reminded me of a mint teabag. It tingled my lips more than the Vanilla Mint flavor, but I thought it fell flat when it came to the mint smell/taste.

VANILLA MINT
This was interesting… when opening and applying, it smelled like a York Peppermint patty. I really didn’t smell too much vanilla scent, nor did I really taste it either.
The actual lip balm went on smooth and silky, and I did experience some tingling because of the peppermint oil in the balm.

I had some difficulty getting the caps off, but I did like that I had more ‘real estate’ to work with. The grooves in the caps also made gripping them easier when pulling them open.

The thing that I see disabled people having the most trouble with is twisting the base. The two I personally tested worked harder than traditional lip balm bases. I know this is a feature of the tube, but depending on how affected their arms/hands are, it will be very difficult for disabled people to use this.

This is available from Amazon for $15.97 or you can find a local retailer by clicking on Find your local Retailer.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Finally, a lip balm without the goop and mess! Can't beat that!

ADMIN POST -- Where I've been...

ADMIN POST -- Where I've been

So, you may have noticed that posts have been slowing down around here... I'm lucky if I get 1-2 posts written a month anymore.

And the straight up truth is... I'm lazy. No other way to say it.

That's not to say I don't have the DESIRE to blog... I actually do. However, it seems like the days I actually plan to sit down and do something blogging related, whether it's an actual post, organize my Google Drive or even crop/watermark pictures, something comes up...

~The grandparents are going shopping and we (Mama Melissa and I) need to watch the house.
~The grandparents are going out to eat and we (Mama Melissa and I) need to watch the house, plus find ourselves something to eat, unless Grandma brings something home for us.
~The grandparents need Mama Melissa's help and I have to keep Chase out of their way.
~The Internet cuts out and I'm left with a 15" paperweight until it's back on. (which is the one downfall of using a Chromebook)

or (and this is the main one) I get distracted by Facebook and/or YouTube and nothing gets done.

Yes, I COULD take my Chromebook downstairs and work there while the grandparents are gone, but they like to leave on a moment's notice (even though I ask if they are going anywhere that day) and Grandpa has a complete meltdown if someone is not down there when they walk out the door. That leaves me no time to 'bag up' my system and peripherals to take them downstairs.

I do plan to get 'caught up' and get some more content out for you guys, but until the weather cools off to the point where it's too cold to do any outside work and I don't have to watch Chase and/or the house, the content will still be slim.

I'm hoping this week, I can at least get the Google Drive organized and the unedited photos cropped and watermarked. I also want to get a few EXTREMELY OVERDUE sub box reviews posted.

If you're still reading the blog, THANK YOU. You guys are why I do this.

I got a notification in my FedEx app that the September box is on it's way to me, so I figured, 'Well, I don't want a repeat of July... better get on the ball!'

August’s theme is ‘Love is Family.’ There are so many opportunities to enjoy being with family this time of year. You might be planning one last big summer getaway, or just getting back into the back-to-school family routine. So why not make that time even better and add in some irresistible snacks? Everything in this month’s box is sure to be a hit with the whole family, so share it around and make this August one your family will always remember.

Now, this month’s box didn’t come with an information sheet, like the other Love with Food boxes usually come with. It just had a card with the paragraph above and a few other tidbits that really didn’t have anything to do with the snacks. While it saves ME time from not having to type the info, it makes it a bit hard to disclose all the dietary guidelines. I’m hoping this is just a one-time thing, and I will try my best to provide what diets can have the snacks.
*It would be safe to assume these snacks are gluten-free only.

^^what I received -- excuse the cluttered desk^^

GOODIE GIRL COOKIES
I received the Midnight Brownie and the Quinoa Choco-chip cookies and my review of them is here: http://www.thecpchick.com/2016/03/toufayan-bakeries.html
TASTE: 9/10

STONERIDGE ORCHARDS MONTMORENCY CHERRIES
I was a bit scared to eat these, because I thought the pits were left in the cherries and I'd have problems with the pits hitting my gum issues.
However, These are very reminiscent of raisins. They have the texture of raisins, and they taste a bit like raisins, but yet you can taste the cherry flavor.
What surprised me the most about these was that they weren't very tart, like the bag said. I was expecting a puckering effect when eating these, but they were actually on the sweet side.
TASTE: 8/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten Free, Non-GMO, Kosher

PEANUT BUTTER & CO. MIGHTY NUT POWDERED PEANUT BUTTER IN VANILLA
I really don't do powdered peanut butter. Call me lazy (or not wanting to deal with drama) but I didn't want to be bothered trying to make this. I don't even like eating the peanut butter that needs mixing.
I may look on their website for a recipe for a milkshake/smoothie, but as of right now, this is going unmade.
TASTE: ?/10

NATURE’S PATH ENVIROKIDZ CHOCOLATE CHIP GRANOLA BAR
I wouldn’t really call this a ‘granola’ bar. There was more rice instead of the oats. Not saying it’s a bad thing, since I like rice. But it made it more crumble-prone than traditional granola bars. It did hurt my gum issues, but I have a feeling that it was the whole chocolate chips hitting the sores than the granola itself.
TASTE: 9/10

POPCORNERS CARNIVAL KETTLE CORN CHIPS
FROM THE BACK OF THE BAG: We love snacks, just like everyone else --  the crunch, the flavor, the fun. But we’re not about compromising and being forced to choose between the junky chips that make you feel bad or the alternative chips that taste like cardboard. So we said to ourselves, *It’s time for something different. Something better.*
We’re always striving for something that everyone will enjoy. Here are some things that we do:
~Preservative Free
~Dairy Free
~Vegan
~Peanut & Tree Nut Free
~Double Pressed for Extra Crunchiness

These kind of reminded me of a funnel cake from a fair, which only increased my homesickness, since the Harford Fair just passed. I’m determined to make it back to the fair one of these years.
But these had a lightly sweet taste to them; nothing overpowering, but you could definitely taste the sweetness. I loved the crunchiness, but they didn’t hurt my teeth either.
TASTE: 9/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten Free, Non-GMO, Vegan, Dairy Free

DIPPIN’ CHIPS VEGGIE CHIPS
KALE, CARROT & SPINACH TORTILLA CHIPS
Party-tizers Veggie Dippin’ Chips™ are uniquely designed dippable tortilla chips made with certified gluten-free ingredients. Our recipe starts with US home grown corn and a blend of delicious veggies, carrots, spinach & kale. We challenge you to try them with or without a dip. We love them both ways!!!

Now, I'm not 100% sure what I should be tasting here, because when I opened the bag, all I could smell is the carrots... or maybe it's the kale I smell.
I tasted a lot of corn, kale and salt... VERY heavy on the salt. Not saying they weren't delicious, but I'd be leery of eating these if you're avoiding sodium/salt.
TASTE: 8.5/10

FRU-LICIOUS FRUIT & CREAM SMOOTHIE IN BANANA
For ease and less mess, I took this and added it to a cup of milk for a ‘banana milkshake.’ The milk weakened it a little too much, but I could still taste the banana in it.
The main problem I had with this was it was very thin and runny. When I think of a smoothie, I think of a drink that has some thickness to it… like a milkshake or at the very least, Stage 1 baby food. This ‘smoothie’ was the equivalent to a fruit juice, like Apple juice or a boxed fruit drink.
TASTE: 8/10

GOT SNACKS CINNAMON HONEY ROASTED COCONUT CHIPS
FROM THE BAG: did you know? Coconut keeps you healthy with
Fatty acids promote heart health and improve good cholesterol (HDL)
High in Fiber - Consuming foods high in fiber helps keeps you feeling full. This also helps your digestion.
Manganese helps breaking down fats and protein while supporting both the immune and nervous systems, as well as promoting stable blood sugar levels. It also helps the use of iron, thiamine and Vitamin E.
Oils and fibers from coconut meat act as Probiotics
Natural Lauric Acid, Capric Acid and Catechins

Okay, this is the ONE product in the box I had a MAJOR problem with. Looking at the bag, I’m thinking I’m getting a good amount of coconut, which I LOVE. And being Cinnamon Honey flavor, I was looking SO forward to this snack.

So imagine my shocked look when I FINALLY get the bag open, and I see this…

^^Immediately after opening the bag^^

Not even half a bag.
However, these are absolutely delicious. They are crunchy, but not hard on the teeth. I loved the flavor. The cinnamon honey mixture played WONDERFULLY with the coconut taste.
TASTE: 8/10

VEGAN ROB’S SPINACH & MATCHA KETTLE KETTLE CHIPS
FROM THE BAG: Hi! I’m Rob…
My childhood was filled with passion and wonder. I dreamt of making snacks and making people happy.
My first snacks were made by hand in 1986; clean snacks that were both delicious and functional. I knew then the importance of beneful blends and seasonings made with real ingredients, and I continue to use them today.
Vegan Rob’s Spinach and Matcha are Non-GMO Kettle cooked potato chips that will make you crave more.
You can follow us and be a part of our journey which has lasted 30 years.
Thanks so much, from the bottom of my heart.
“Live & Enjoy!” -- My mother’s mantra
Rob

These were interesting. I tasted NO spinach on these. I tasted the potato chip and a hint of sweetness from the Matcha, which is finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea.
The thing I didn’t like is how hard these were on my teeth. I know Kettle chips are hard to begin with, but usually saliva will soften them. These didn’t seem to soften much with saliva.
TASTE: 7/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten Free, Non-GMO, Vegan

SHEFFA is what food should be -- a wealth of enjoyment and sustenance. After all, food is energy. Real food is loaded with simple, pure energy that flows from nature.

Leslie & Amotz
Sheffa Foods Co-Founders

Not entirely sure what exactly hit my gums, but SOMETHING in this hit my oral issues and I nearly went through the roof.
The taste was yummy, but a bit spicy for my liking. It tasted like they lost the chili powder in this.
TASTE: 7/10

BOB’S RED MILL GLUTEN FREE MUFFIN MIX
I was not able to make these… I now live in a house with 3 adult diabetics, and the sugar content is WAY too high for them. I ended up passing this to my cousin.
TASTE: UNKNOWN

I really don't see disabled people having a problem eating these snacks, barring any chewing/swallowing issues. The hardest thing I see would be opening the box and the individual packages.

The Love With Food Gluten-Free box has merged with Taste Guru. Please visit this link for more info.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Still loving the variety in this month's box. I like how I got snacks, sweets, AND part of a meal in the same box.
