Let's Hatch Chicks!: Explore the Wonderful World of Chickens and Eggs

Let's Hatch Chicks!: Explore the Wonderful World of Chickens and Eggs
by Lisa Steele

Introduce children to the life cycle of chickens from egg, to hatching, and beyond with Let's Hatch Chicks!. Author Lisa Steele, of Fresh Eggs Daily, shows the entire process in kid friendly terms.

In this book you’ll meet Violet, a plucky and fun-loving chicken. Violet has an exciting secret to share with you: she’s ready to be a mom!

Join Violet as she keeps her eggs warm and protects them from danger. See what happens each week as the chick grows inside the egg. And when the new chicks arrive, that's when the fun begins again! These baby chickens need a lot of help to get along in the big world. They will need food, a new home, and sometimes a little help from mama hen.
So, usually I don't review books here, but my 2nd cousin now has chickens and she's new to the whole world of raising chickens. I knew her mom and her grandparents really have no clue what they are doing either, so when Lisa Steele asked for reviewers for her book, I asked if I could review a cope and I planned to let my 2nd cousin take the honors.

Sadly, I haven't seen my cousin since Christmas, so I haven't been able to give her the book (my copy arrived a few days after Christmas). Since I don't want to delay Lisa's review, I'm going to try to review this as best I can, since I'm an adult and this is aimed more towards elementary-aged children.

^^Cover of the book^^

I thought the illustrations in this were just absolutely ADORABLE. They are full-color and well drawn. and the colors are rich and vibrant throughout the whole book.

^^Random pages in the book, showing the beautiful illustrations^^

I thought the story flowed well, going from Violet prepping the nest to her laying her eggs, to how the chicks hatch and grow up with Violet's help and teaching along the way. It's aimed for children in grades 1-2 (6-8 year olds) and is very easy for a child to follow along with, but it's not written in a 'mocking' tone or like Ms. Steele is 'talking down' to the child.

The entire book is super informative, even for an adult. I have NO experience or even knowledge of raising chickens (which is sort of funny, since I think my daddy had chickens in our barn when I was a child) and even *I* learned a lot of things about how to raise chickens.

I don't see disabled kids having trouble with this book, besides a reading disability. The book is easy to hold and the pages turn easily.

Lisa Steele is a fifth-generation chicken keeper who has been around chickens most of her life, so it's no surprise she has made her name raising her own backyard flock and sharing natural chicken keeping advice. Lisa is also an aspiring herbalist and avid gardener who shares tips on both her award-winning Fresh Eggs Daily blog and Facebook page of the same name. She holds a Maine Master Gardener certification and her popular website has been named one of Better Homes & Gardens Top Ten Gardening Blogs.

A regular contributor to such publications as Backyard Poultry, Hobby Farm, the Farmers Almanac and Chickens magazine, as well as HGTVGardens.com and BHG.com, Lisa has become the most trusted voice in natural chicken keeping. She has appeared on P. Allen Smith's radio and television programs, NPR, Good Morning Maine and Bill Green's Maine, and is currently hosting her own "chicken lifestyle" television show on Maine's WPME-TV.

She is the author of Gardening with Chickens, Fresh Eggs Daily, and Duck Eggs Daily, and frequently tours the country speaking and signing books at fairs and other venues.

Lisa and her husband live on a small farm in Maine with a menagerie of chickens, ducks, dogs, and an indoor-outdoor barn cat. In her free time, she enjoys knitting socks, DIY projects and cooking with fresh produce from the garden and fresh eggs from her coop.

This is available from Amazon for $10.52.

Really informative book for kids and adults alike!

^^what I received^^

Going in order of the unboxing...

Very… plain. I didn’t detect much of a salty flavor on these. There’s actually a cereal out on the market that has the same flavor, but I seriously cannot remember the name of it. I prefer the Cheddar Cheese flavor more.
TASTE: 6/10
PERFECT FOR THESE TYPES OF DIETS: Gluten Free, Diabetic/Sugar Free,

FROM THE BAG: Bakery On Main was born in the little bakery of Michael Smulders’ Natural Food Market on Main Street in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Our mission from the beginning has always been to make our friends and customers HAPPY with wholesome and delicious baked goods. That mission continues with our fearlessly unique, gluten-free granola!

This reminded me of the Honey Graham Oh’s! cereal. It was a bit hard on my teeth, but nothing that a little saliva wouldn’t soften up. I loved the whole almonds in the bag, but the cranberries lacked flavor. They had the texture of raisins, but absolutely no taste.
I’d probably buy this as cereal, that’s how good it is!
TASTE: 8.5/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten free, Kosher, Non-GMO

These were VERY hard on my teeth and actually very bland. I didn’t taste any Pepper Jack flavor until the very end of chewing the piece.
I took 3 pieces for tasting purposes, then passed them onto Mama Melissa, since these had NO sugar in them and worked well in her diabetic diet.
TASTE: 7/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten Free, Diabetic/Sugar Free, Non-GMO

FROM THE WRAPPER: Your world is what you make it. Choose your adventure. Take chances. Fuel your life.
For all life’s adventures.

After getting a Snickerdoodle protein cookie in Last March’s box that was completely disgusting, I was skeptical of even trying this. But I sucked it up and tried a bite.
I was surprised how delicious this was. It tasted just like a normal cookie. It was soft and chewy, which I actually don’t normally like, but this wasn’t bad. It wasn’t overloaded with chocolate chips, and I could taste both the chocolate and the peanut butter.
Unlike the Snickerdoodle cookie, THIS I actually would eat again.
TASTE: 9/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten Free, Sugar Alcohol Free, Soy Free, Dairy Free, Vegan, Kosher, High Fiber

I received 2 different flavors of these…
Going into this and reading the ingredients, I thought this would be like a granola bar, which I love. Even opening the package and seeing it have a brownie like texture, I still thought it would taste alright, considering it had cinnamon in it, and I do like cinnamon flavored foods.
I couldn’t even finish the bite I took. I got 2 or 3 chews into it and I had to spit it out. I couldn’t even swallow it. It was totally disgusting.
TASTE: 1/10

And if I thought the Apple Cinnamon one was terrible, the Berry Blast flavor was even WORSE. I took a smaller bite and that’s all I could stomach of it before throwing it back in the box, unfinished.
My major problem with these bars is how they got stuck in my teeth. They are very chewy and will ‘mold’ to your teeth.
I will never be buying these.
TASTE: .5/10

FROM THE BACK: We’re two brothers who love to snack! We think everyone deserves to crunch and dip without compromise -- to enjoy a snack that tastes great and is good for you. But we just couldn’t find a snack that fit the bill… so we created Beanitos.
Beanitos are an honestly delicious snack made from super nutritious beans that have fiber and protein grown right in them, They’re real food, full of crunchy flavor, free of preservatives, and made with only natural non-GMO ingredients.
Some call us revolutionaries. Others call us and say, “C’mon over and bring some Beanitos.” We think you’ll call Beanitos your new favorite snack!
Doug & Dave
The Foreman Brothers

We got a bag of the Original flavor, which is just black beans lightly salted with sea salt. I would have liked more of a salty flavor to these. They tasted very bland to me. They had a nice crunch to them, but still were bland.
I think I would have liked these more if we had received one of the other flavors.
TASTE: 6/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten free, Non-GMO, Diabetic/Sugar Free,

I received 2 different flavors of these…
Little cubes of what tasted like concord grape and blueberry Fruit Roll-ups. They weren’t too bad, actually, But I would have liked to taste more berries, like raspberry or blackberry.
TASTE: 8/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten free, Non-GMO, Vegan

While these were good, I really did taste too much strawberry flavor in them. I tasted more of the apple juice flavor listed in the ingredients. I did like these, but I think I liked the Mixed Berry pouch more.
TASTE: 7/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten free, Non-GMO, Vegan

FROM THE PACKAGE: Gourmet  Foods Made Simple & Better For You

Annie Chun’s Organic Seaweed Snacks
Never feel guilty about snacking again!
These light and airy sheets of seaweed are lightly seasoned for a satisfyingly savory crunch.
They’re irresistibly delicious -  and they’re gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan!

Okay, I am NOT one for seaweed. Only reason I managed to get the Ocean Halo’s seaweed snacks down was the BBQ flavor on them.
So, I pretty much was dreading trying these. But for the sake of review, I did.
I ate ONE. ONE sheet and I was done. They do have a generous amount of salt on them, and that salt leaves a nice aftertaste, but I still couldn’t get past the seaweed taste.
Sorry, Seaweed fans, I can’t do it
TASTE: 2/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten free, Non-GMO, Diabetic/Sugar Free, Organic, Vegan, Dairy free

FROM THE BAG: Popcorn is the canvas that we paint with bold flavor!
Like the Pop Art movement itself, Pop Art Gourmet Popcorn transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. We elevate this All-American snack by infusing it with fun flavors that appeal to the foodie snack lover. Our palette of ingredients includes only the finest quality Organic Non-GMO popcorn and all natural herbs and spices.
Our Thai Coconut Curry Popcorn is a unique blend of savory spices mixed with creamy coconut milk. This popcorn is loaded with exotic flavor and perfect for those who crave the tropical taste of Thailand!

This was… interesting. I don’t think I could really taste the curry on this, and the coconut milk gave it a strange flavor. It really didn’t taste ‘tropical’ either. I don’t think I’d buy this flavor again.
TASTE: 6/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten free, Non-GMO, Diabetic/Sugar Free,

FROM THE POUCH: Squeezing in the good stuff is what Fruigees is all about. Our organic fruit snack in a squeeze pack is made with a healthy combo of fruit and veggie juices. Always on the go, it’s tough to eat right, so we’re offering everyone a tasty treat that can’t be beat -- Dave & Josh
-Organic Ingredients
-Non GMO
-Totally Vegan
-Essential Nutrients
-Gluten Free
-No Sugar Added

As we know, I usually have BAD luck with these fruit and veggie squeeze pouches. Usualy they taste absolutely DISGUSTING.
But this one wasn’t too awful.
It reminded me of a less sweet pulpy orange juice. I actually couldn’t taste the carrots in this, unless that is what made up the pulp of the drink.
If I found these in a store I visit regularly, I probably would buy this flavor, which is surprising since I HATED the ‘Kalefornia Grape’ flavor by the same company.
One plus of this pouch is it’s very easy to open. I had NO trouble opening this myself.
TASTE: 9/10
PERFECT FOR THESE DIETS: Gluten free, Non-GMO, Vegan, Kosher, No Sugar Added (but NOT Diabetic friendly)

The biggest problem I see disabled folks having with these products are opening them. A LOT of the packages, I had to take scissors to, so if scissors aren't your strong point, you may have a problem opening these packages.

Still loving the variety in this month's box. I like how I got lots of snacks that are good for me.
